AMO Complete Moisture Plus Contact Lens Solution

On Monday, May 25th, Advanced Medical Optics Inc. voluntarily recalled its Complete Moisture Plus contact lens solution. They received shocking results from a study completed by the CDC (U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention). The CDC interviewed 46 patients who had developed Acanthamoeba keratitis (AK) since January 2005, and found that 39 were soft contact lens wearers; 21 of those were users of AMO’s Complete Moisture Plus solution.

Acanthamoeba keratitis (AK) is a rare but devastating infection of the eye that could lead to permanent blindness. The infection affects the cornea and is caused by a waterborne organism. It is estimated that 85% of U.S. cases of Acanthamoeba keratitis occur in contact lens users.

Contact lens wearers should consult with their eye doctor if they have any of the following symptoms:

  • eye pain
  • eye redness
  • blurred vision
  • sensitivity to light
  • sensation of something in the eye
  • excessive tearing

Not everyone will experience the same symptoms, nor do they occur in any type of sequence. Early onset of AK can feel like any other eye infection but may progress and cause severe pain in the eye as well as causing loss of vision. If left untreated, this vision loss can be permanent.
