Types of Work Related Injuries

Pennsylvania’s Bureau of Workers’ Compensation reported in December, 2010, on the following most frequent types of workplace injuries resulting in time off of work by injured workers:

  • Sprains and strains caused by overexertion
  • Contusions, crushing and bruise injuries
  • Cuts, lacerations and punctures
  • Fractures

The bureau reported that “Injuries to the upper extremities (arms, wrists, hands, fingers, shoulders) accounted for about 32.4 percent … of the total cases reported in 2009.” (Source: Pennsylvania Work Injuries and Illnesses 2009). Reported causes of injuries on the job included overexertion, being struck by something, falling on the same level, bodily reactions, striking against something, falls from elevation, being caught in, under or between obstacles, and highway accidents. That year (2009), there was a total of 389 cases of amputation or loss of use of a body part. Areas of the economy where the largest numbers of injuries were reported included the following:

  • Agriculture
  • Mining
  • Construction
  • Manufacturing
  • Trade, transportation and utilities
  • Educational and health services
