The Delaware County Times reported that two people were killed and 196 were injured in auto accidents in Pennsylvania over the 3-day Easter weekend. Although this represents a decrease since last year’s Easter weekend crashes, state police said they will continue to make an effort to reduce the number of crashes. A total of 72 out of the 527 crashes were alcohol-related.
According to 2009 PennDOT statistics, more crashes and deaths occurred on Fridays and Saturdays in Pennsylvania. The number of deaths on Saturdays and Sundays is proportionally greater than the actual number of crashes, which could be because of alcohol use.
When it comes to alcohol-related crashes nationally, a larger number happens on the weekends. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that in 2009, 31% of drivers involved in fatal weekend crashes were under the influence of alcohol, which was a total of 5,718 drivers.
