According to a recent study from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, over the past 5 years, distracted driving played a part in 10% of the 7,000 accident fatalities. There were 13,000 accidents involving 16-19-year-old distracted drivers.
April is National Distracted Driver Awareness month. At this time there are bills being discussed concerning cell phone use. It is not yet illegal in Pennsylvania to drive while texting or talking. However, the more a person talks or texts while driving, the more likely they are to be in a motor vehicle accident.
There are different types of distractions while driving. Visual is talking your eyes off the road, manual is taking your hands off the wheel, and cognitive is taking your mind off what you are doing. According to the US Department of Transportation, texting is the most dangerous because it involves all three of those types of distractions.
