Several Accidents Kill Six People In Philadelphia Area

A series of motor vehicle accidents in the Philadelphia area last weekend claimed the lives of six people, including a 23-year-old motorcycle rider and a 5-year-old boy. Four of the deaths occurred in the city, while two of them took place in the suburbs.

The child was in an SUV driven by his grandmother, which was hit by a car, causing him to be ejected from the vehicle. The collision was strong enough to flip the SUV over, officials said. The accident took place at an intersection on the morning of Jan. 29.

The grandmother was also injured in the accident, as was her 21-year-old daughter and 2-year-old granddaughter. The grandmother had allegedly gone through a red light prior to the accident, police said.

Very early that same morning, a 46-year-old female motorist and her 45-year-old male passenger were killed while riding in a pickup truck. In the single-vehicle accident, officials said the truck struck a utility pole.

Another passenger in the vehicle, a 45-year-old woman, survived the crash and was taken to a nearby hospital where she was listed in stable condition, police said. The accident occurred around 4 a.m.

Very early on Saturday morning, another fatal single-car accident in Bucks County took the life of a 43-year-old Northampton man. Apparently, his vehicle crossed over an oncoming lane and hit a telephone pole and two trees before coming to rest. The man’s three passengers all suffered extensive injuries, state police said.

The motorcycle rider was killed when his bike slid into a light pole and a car while attempting to avoid another vehicle that was pulling out, officials said. That accident occurred on the evening of Jan. 27 at approximately 11:30 p.m. in the Port Richmond area of Philadelphia.

That same evening, a 50-year-old female pedestrian crossing the street at Easton Road near Girard Avenue in Horsham was struck and killed by a car.

Police did not say if slippery road conditions may have contributed to the tragic accidents. Hopefully, this weekend will prove much safer on Philadelphia-area roads.
