Duck Boat Tours Resume 9 Months After Crash

On April 21, nine months after a collision between a duck boat and a tug boat killed 2 people, the duck boat tours began again on the Delaware river. According to an article on www.delcotimes.com, tourists felt safe riding on the boats since there are new safety regulations. Additional precautions include taking a shorter route and having a spotter boat in case of an emergency.

Ride The Ducks is the nation’s largest amphibious tour operator and amphibious vehicle manufacturer. They have over 90 vehicles in the United States that carry more than 1,200,000 guests each year. The Philadelphia Ride the Duck tours were suspended for nine months after the fatal accident and say that they have improved their safety standards.

The National Transportation Safety Board did not only blame the boats in the July 7 accident, but the operator of the tugboat was believed to be on his cell phone at the time of the accident. However, the passengers on the duck boat were never instructed on how to use the life vests and the canopies on the boat made it difficult to get off the sinking boat.

Although the precautions are now being taken since last year’s accident, the design of the duckboats has not been changed and therefore may not prevent more tragedies from happening.
