Vehicle Hits Illegally Parked Tractor Trailer

A New York woman was killed on April 21 when the car she was riding in crashed into the back of a tractor trailer that was illegally parked on the shoulder of a NJ turnpike entrance ramp. The driver of the car was seriously injured. According to the article in The Philadelphia Inquirer, the truck driver was given a traffic ticket and the accident is being investigated.

Traffic Safety Facts showed that in 2009, there were 503 people killed in large truck accidents and 17,000 people injured. About 54 of those fatalities involved alcohol.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has rules regarding parking of tractor-trailers. Serious or fatal accidents may be due to an illegally parked truck. If a tractor-trailer is illegally parked it does not provide sufficient warning to motorists coming upon it and appears to be invisible. By the time the driver sees the tractor-trailer, it is often too late to prevent an accident.

An experienced truck accident lawyer will be able to determine if the truck driver was responsible for an accident. If you have recently been the victim of a truck accident, you have a right to financial compensation. Irresponsible actions by the trucker or surrounding drivers are often the cause of a truck accident. Accidents may also be caused by other reasons such as defective equipment or improper maintenance, which can be traced to the trucker’s supervisor, truck company, or manufacturer of defective equipment.
