Two Workers Abused Dementia Patient At Nursing Home

When we place loved ones in a nursing care facility we assume that the professionals who work there will provide the utmost care. However, more than one in ten elders may experience some type of abuse. Recently, two workers at a Delaware County, PA nursing home were charged with abusing an elderly dementia patient. They were charged with crimes that included aggravated assault, simple assault, criminal conspiracy, harassment, neglect of a care-dependent person. According to the article in The Philadelphia Inquirer, they abused a 78-year-old dementia patient who lived at a Sunrise Senior Living Facility.

The Administration on Aging defines elder abuse as any knowing, intentional, or negligent act by a caregiver or any other person that causes harm or a serious risk of harm to a vulnerable adult. Research from the National Center on Elder Abuse indicates that only one in five or fewer elder abuse cases are reported. Very few seniors who have been abused get the help they need. The abuse comes in many forms, such as physical abuse; neglect; emotional or psychological abuse; verbal abuse and threats; financial abuse and exploitation; sexual abuse; and abandonment.
