Study Ranks Philadelphia Drivers Worst Among Largest Cities

According to an annual study from All-State Insurance, Philadelphia has the highest crash rate among cities with 1 million residents or more. Overall, Philadelphia drivers ranked 190th out of 195 cities for most number of accidents. This was the seventh year in a row the city earned a low ranking, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

The study declared that Philadelphia drivers experience an accident every 6.5 years. By comparison, the safest drivers were found in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, where drivers experience an accident every 13.8 years, on average. Washington D.C. was one of the cities to rank below Philadelphia, but its population is less than 1 million.

The study was based on accident claims filed with the insurance provider, and a spokesperson pointed out that insurance fraud is not taken into consideration.

The Philadelphia Inquirer said the ranking shouldn’t come as a surprise after a State Farm study once revealed that two of the nation’s five most crash-prone intersections are found on the city’s Roosevelt Boulevard. The second most-dangerous intersection is at Red Lion Road, and fifth most-dangerous intersection is at Grant Avenue, according to the State Farm study.

Since it seems pretty likely that all Philadelphia motorists will be involved in an accident at some point in their lives, it’s important to know what to do after a motor vehicle accident occurs. Here are a few important steps to take:

  1. Get emergency medical care anyone who needs it.
  2. Cooperate with police at the scene of the accident.
  3. Take photos of the vehicles involved, the scene of the accident and any injuries.
  4. Contact a personal injury attorney to find out your rights.
  5. Be wary of insurance company representatives or police investigators without talking to a lawyer first.
